The soft breeze whipped everybody's faces as the ship sailed its way across the crystal waters. The crew members of the Bloody Heart were working hard, sweat dripping off their mangled faces. The crew were a mismatched group of murderers and cut-throats, all with grotesque scars and hungry tattoos. The captain of the bloodthirsty ship was in his cabin, fast asleep. Dreams of the raged sea filled his mind as he slept, feet on the desk. His cabin was littered with all manner of loot from previous escapades, Fine womens jewlery, still warm from the necks he ripped them from. The light from the dirty windows poured through and glistened off his wet body. A pair of laced brown boots and black pantaloons clothed him. It was a baking day.

Captain Farrell may have looked young, but stories plagued the sea of his mercyless mannor, far beyond his age. he was feared highest among all pirates. Some even said that he was crafted from the very sea mist he sails when he sold his soul to the devil.

His eyes opened. A noise above deck had interrupted him from his sleep. It sounded like a brawl. A girl was screaming, men were laughing. He sighed, grabbed a bottle of expensive whisky that he stole from a cargo ship and donned his feather hat. Kicking the door to his cabin blasted him with salty air and the light that blinded him. He tilted his hat over his eyes to shade them and strode out to where the noise was coming from. He didnt have to walk far. A man had grabbed a wench by the arm and was dragging her about. he was obviously drunk, it must have been her father that was trying to land the first punch, many other women and crew gathered to urge on the fight. The captain parted his lips, took a breath and. 'Aye, When the cat's away eh? Put 'er down an' get back to work. Tha' goes for the lot of ya!'

Hmm, it’s just about midday, should really get this finished off... Olivia though to herself. Below deck, the only way to tell the time was through the cracks of the deck above; being below deck, though damp, humid and crowded had its advantages. There was shade and the crew on deck rarely came down. Focusing on potatoes that needed to be peeled and cut, Olivia lulled side to side in rhythm with the boat and it swayed ever so slightly from left to right through the calm waters. Wiping her brow with the lace on her sleeve, Olivia jumped as she heard screams and cheers just around the corner; causing her to slip with the knife and catch her hand. Not too fussed she turned the corner to see one of the crew was restless and decided to pay them a visit.

Running after the sail hand along with half of those below deck they were greeted with that majority of the crew jeering and laughing. Olivia, along with two of her sisters were about to run in and pull back their cousin until their father pushed past sending a punch flying at the man with a hold on his niece. It seemed as if it was all about to kick off until a door was thrown open, the crowd all turned to the sound of hard soles. Olivia drew back from the centre of the crowd where her father and the sail hand were still brawling as if they hadn’t noticed the captain’s entrance.

Her cousin released by the sail hand, Olivia ran to her aid as she swooned. Struggling to hold her, a couple of others took her from Olivia’s arms. A sigh of relief left her dry lips now she wasn’t bearing the weight of her cousin. The sun was too hot for Olivia and she still had those potatoes to peel and cut. Remembering the potatoes brought a sharp stinging pain to her hand. I’ll show this to Lisa, she what she makes of it, looking at the blood slowly dribbling down her wrist. Turning back to the stair case Olivia kept her eyes on the floor trying not to attract any attention to her for dwelling on deck. Close enough to the staircase Olivia picked up the pace, only to stumble and hit the floor; she had tripped on something. Looking around she saw someone’ shoe, about to cruse Olivia looked up from the floor to see it was the captain’s shoe. “Captain, sir, I’m so very sorry, it won’t happen again!” Not sure whether to stay or run she chose the latter and hurried down the stair and back to her stool where she continued to peel cut and prepare food for later in the day.

Everybody scattered at the captain's remarks. A few fair haired wench's flew past him. he didnt take much notice, breathing in the sea air, until he saw a cut on one girls wrist. She was running past him, and he casually put out his foot to stop her, not wanting any of the attention. Unfortunately that is what he got when she tripped over his foot and ended up of the floor quite flustered. She apologised and ran off back below deck. He didnt recognise her face, to be perfectly honest he didnt recognise many of the womens faces. Most of them lived and died below deck. They were as meaningful as furnature to him. Probably less so, you could sell furnature for a reasonable price. Only the pretty ones fetched a good sale on land. Captain Farrell was a curious fellow, which got him into the strqangest situations. Noticing some older women walk by, he grabbed one by the arm 'The fair haired wench, grabbed the harrassed one when she fainted, send her to me?' The older, red-haired woman looked at him blankly, she looked terrified 'L...Livvy sir?' He screwed his face in annoyance and pushed the woman away 'how am i s'posed to know her name woman? Go find her.' She courtseyed and ran beneath deck. The captain scoffed at the wa the woman ran, before prancing back into his cabin and lying back on his chair, waiting the arrival of the girl. He tipped his hat further forward on his head and lifted his feet on his desk.

Getting back to her stool near the wines and ales, Olivia was still shaken from bumping into the captain, she never had seen him up close she spent most her time under the deck, she was most of the time too clumsy to be trusted with taking food to anyone of higher rank so she was often made to clean or prepare food to be cooked. Sitting down again Olivia wrapped an old cloth around her wrist; she didn’t have time for Lisa to clean it. Taking up the knife she began to frantically cut the potatoes in front of her, grumbling to herself as she cut. Why can’t they stay on deck? I’m far behind as it is! So were most of the girls down here, everyone was rushing and shouting. Olivia tried to drown it out buy humming and swaying with the rhythm of the boat once more. And as soon as Olivia wasn’t on edge from bumping into captain in a foolish manor she heard the shrill cry that anyone under deck would recognise as her aunt. “LIV! LIV! TH- the captain wants to see you!” the cry made her jump, dropping the knife again into the palm of her opposite hand, she peered around the corner and before she could get so much as a word in her aunt grabbed her by the shoulder and began to push her through the crowds. Going up the stairs and to the captain’s cabin she rubbed the blood on the side of her skirt before opening the door quietly. “ C-captain?”

'come in.' he breathed, his voice silken. In the time between the wait and the arrival of the girl he had dressed himself in a white shirt and tightly fitting black trousers. He still had on his thick boots and was in the pose as he was before, his feet on his desk amongst his gold. His cabin was an absolute alladins cave of treasures and gold and trinkets and skins and furrs and all mannor of riches from across the globe. His shirt was open, but his torso had dried off. It was a woman named Mary that waited on him hand and foot, she was the only woman that had entered his domain. Well, for purposes other than lust and scandal. His main cabin was large. Including the piano he had 'aqquired' from a gallion. in a door to the side, was his bedroom. He waited.

At first, Olivia couldn’t see the captain, she didn’t mind at first, her jaw dropped and she fell silent. In all of her seventeen years she had never seen so many items of value. Olivia knew that the captain was a very well kept man but she had no idea that he could just have this lying around in his quarters. Managing to pull her eyes away from all of the treasures strewn about the room she turned to her left and saw the captain. Her eyes drifted to the floor one again, not being able to keep eye contact; not that she could even see his eyes. “You, wanted to see me Captain?” Olivia said almost shyly wiping the blood from her right palm onto the side of her skirt her left hand around the rose quartz necklace strung tightly around her neck on a piece of light ribbon.

This cirtainly was the girl that he had seen on deck. Her tattered clothes and dank appearance pleased him. He didnt like to see his crew looking too wethly. Her hair had been bleached by the sun and all around here eyes was black. She was clutcing a necklace. Quartz, rose. Very common back in england. not so much in the warmth of the caribbean. He sat up and moved into the light, picking up a pack of playing cards that was strwen across his desk. 'What is your name?' The girl intruiged him. Any new crew members had to be interrogated by him first. So she wasnt from off board. Probably born on the ship. She looked oddly like Mary, the old woman who cleaned and fetched him food. 'are you related to Mary.' perhaps too many questions at once.

Olivia looked up every so often, until the captain began to pick up a deck of cards, she had seen some on the men and older women use these and give each other possessions; she never understood what it was. “My name? My name is Olivia Wallace.” She caught sight of one of his eyes, seeing that it was focused on the hand that was around the necklace she let go of it slowly. “Yes, she is my grandmother, captain.” Pausing for a second she continued “Is that why you called me?”

The Captain at hearing this unexpectedly slammed the now re-aligned bpack of cards on to his desk and rose to his full height. 'You are in no position to ask me questions wench. Sit!' he bellowed before pointing at a luxury upholstered mahogany chair on the opposite side of his desk. He sat back down slowly, thinking about Mary. She hadnt visited him in a while, he had become quite fond of the mithering old lady. The sunlight poured through the windows behind his chair. The window ledge was free from loot. 'I said sit. What is wrong with you? Do you have a death wish?'

Olivia jumped at the sound of the captains’ orders and after the second time she sat, and deadly still at that. Once again she couldnt look the captain in the face so her gaze went upon the piece of cloth around her wrist, she ran the frayed end through her fingers “ I- i am terribly sorry, captain.”

He sighed. 'Quit your whining.' He looked down to what she was fiddling with. It was a cloth, soaked in blood no doubt. That is what made him notice her in the first place. 'Give me your wrist. The one you have cut.' His voice was noticably softer as he cleared a small space on his desk and reached across with his hand. Unlike all the other crew members, his skin was soft, and tanned lightly. His hands made it look like he had never worked a day in his life. Not a scratch, absolutely flawless. The rest of him was shrouded with shadow. He looked at the girl from underneath his hat. She was pretty, very pretty. He could get alot for her at slave market. Perhaps even pass her off for a european princess... just. She looked very tired. And she had obviously been working hard.

Olivia closed her eyes for a second, she was certain she had done something wrong, but wasnt sure what. As he asked for her wrist with the cut, her eyes looked up to him , she couldnt see much of him , the sun was far too bright. Confused, she was about to ask why but swiftly remembering a few minutes ago she decided to hold her tounge swiftly and instead hold her wrist out on the desk for the Captain. The tips of his fingers were a new feeling to her , never had she felt such smooth skin. Her eyes following his hand to the bandage she said quietly as if she didnt want him to hear but it still needed to be said “ It will be fine, im just clumsy as all...” For a fleeting moment Olivia didnt see him as the harsh captain who anyone she knew wouldnt say a word without command just as a caring person. But looking up at his shadowy figure she knew that it wasnt true.

“ It will be fine, im just clumsy as all...” His eyes flickered up to her face, she looked very nervous. He smiled 'I'm not going to bite.' slowly and carefully he unwrapped the bandage from her wrist. Sure enough it was soaked in blood. 'You've lost quite a bit of blood.' he stated quietly. His voice still soft. He was sober and would be at least until they were on dry land. Nobody had seen his face as nobody got close enough. Not even Mary. He unrolled the last peice of bandage, as he revealed the wound he accidentally caught the tender skin of the injury with his button. 'Ah shit. Sorry.' He whipped the hat off his head, exposing his face to the light. Surprisingly for a captain of a ship, his hair wasnt long. The light played on his beautiful face as he leaned over her wrist, stroking it lightly. His face was deep in concentration as he looked at the cut. It was obviously very painful. he stood, took off his shirt and returned to look at nher wrist. 'You shouldnt be using knives.'

As the captain slowly unwrapped her bandages she was unsure what he was going to, it wasn’t that bad in her opinion. Even though she was in the presence of the captain Olivia still felt as if she needed to get back to her duties. She was harshly awoken from these worries as he caught the opening of the wound with one of the decorative buttons on the cuff of his shirt. Olivia flinched and went to pull her wrist back but she froze as she saw the captain’s face, she never imagined him to look so clean, so flawless, for a moment she couldn’t make words come from her mouth; she couldn’t turn her eyes away from the dancing light. “But that’s my job. I mean, captain it is what I do, prepare the food for the crew.”

His eyes lingered upon her face as his hand rested over her wrist. His eyes were a pure blue, like the ocean. He was squinting slightly in disbelief. 'you... prepare food... for the crew?' he cleared his throat lightly between each pause. Her face was lit up in wonder. She was probably the first person to see his appearance since mary had been taken ill.

The old tales speaking of him, talked of his features comparable to a siren. But since his rule was mercyless, they had been contorted to him having knotted hair and as many tattoos as scars. The old tale was alomst abolished.

'The blood has stopped, but you will scar.' His voice was silken, almost like music. 'You shouldnt be using knives.' he repeated in a whisper, more to himself than to anyone. He was deep in thought when he stood and picked up another shirt from the wooden floor. He pulled it on. It was much more simple. Just a shirt. No buttons at the cuff. 'Stay there.' he commanded to the girl on the chair. He rifled through a chest of drawers and brought back a sparkling new bandage. 'This should keep it from re-opening.' he muttered to himself, sitting back down opposite her. 'where did you get the necklace?' he inquired of her, his voice monotone. He delecately wrapped the bamdage around her small wrist and waited for her reply.

Olivia didn’t look directly at the Captain, especially now he was looking at her directly; she blushed out of embarrassment as the captain seemed confused at what she did day in, day out. She didn’t have anything to say against her work, it was all she knew so she couldn’t complain. Once again her eyes flicked up to the captain’s face and the fleeting moment seemed to go on for hours.
Everyone below deck was either family or close enough to be family, and there were tales and legends that the captain had formed from the sea mist in a deal with the devil and he was as merciless to the eyes as to those he encountered, but this couldn’t have been less true, his eyes were supposed to be scared and one blind but they were perfect, a brilliant cerulean blue that even the blood of one thousand men couldn’t taint. His short dark hair complemented his flawless tanned skin. She couldn’t believe half of the rumours that had been spread now. She came out of her daze when he spoke.
“Oh, okay.” She wasn’t to bothered about scaring she often looked at herself an d say nothing special, she saw her fate being on the ship like her grandmother until the day she died “ Then i would be out of a job Captain, worthless to the bloody heart...” These words were true. Watching him put on the bandage she said “ Oh , Mary gave this to me ,it was hers before was born.”

Mary gave it to her. He thought he recognised it. 'you wont be worthless. You are to work for me personally.' Mary was old. And with the illness she was close to death. It was only sensible. rather than killing her for seeing his face, he would take her and own her. His personal property. 'You are to report to me this exact time next week. Until then you are to tend to Mary. Explain to her the news. She is the only one you are to discuss me with.' He stood, his intimidating tone being restored. He picked up his hat and placed it carefully on his head before going to stand behind the girl. Slowly, he drew his cutlass from its sheath and dragged it across her throat. 'If so much as a word...' he whispered, his mouth pressing against her ear, 'is uttered about me to anyone other than Mary, you can say goodbye to that pretty face of yours, do you understand me?' He waited for a reply before withdrawing the sword.

Taking on from my grandmother’s position? She thought to herself. I wonder what she did. Looking at the captain she nodded, she wasn’t going to argue with him. She listened to him intently, she already knew his words were law but before that was out of fear, now he had chains around her heart as well as her wrists. As he spoke again she wasn’t sure what to make of it, she was still very scared of him, and he was unpredictable. Cutlass to her throat she could barely nod “Y-yes Captain.”
Leaving the Cabin she must have been in there for a while, going down the stairs people started to ask her questions what had happened but she had to ignore then and walked straight to the back where Mary was laying in bed. Olivia explained the whole situation to her, understanding her grandmother just nodded and gave her best of luck. Olivia slept in the same room as she would be tending for her 24/7.
Three days had passed and Mary was too weak to speak so Olivia was now working by instinct.

The captain hadnt had food in three days and was beginning to feel weak. His stomach complained. Having all this free time left him wondering. How was Mary? Was that girl looking after her? He stood up off the floor and opened the door to above deck. The stars were shining brightly, not many people were on deck. He lifted a trap door in the boards that lead directly into the 'kitchen'. He jumped down as quietly as he could. Nobody was around as his danced his way through the stools and tables. He came to a door and knocked quietly. He was dressed in a long jacket with golden buckles and a hat to match. 'Mary?' he whispered.

Olivia didn’t sleep much over the few nights she was looking after Mary, she could tell her wasn’t in a good state and the end was in fact near. Placing a cold compress on her grandmother forehead she said a prayer or two wishing her peace, wishing for her to live wouldn’t be fair there would be pain. Sat by her side holding her hand Olivia almost waited for the inevitable to happen. It was a while before Mary so much has stirred a little. A while after this Olivia heard a familiar voice that made her jump in the silence. She totted over to the door where she was met by the captain “Captain, sir. Mary is resting, she hasn’t stirred and a while, and has a high fever, I don’t think it will be long...”

The captain looked down at the girl and nodded to her. 'Did i ask you to speak?' he said gruffly before peeling off his coat and stuffing it in her arms. There was a small lantern lit by Mary's bed, illuminating her poor ill face. He slowly walked to her and knelt by her. The room was so small it was unbelievable. But it was bigger than the sleeping quaters. At least she had a bed. He lifted a hand and placed it on hers. Her eyes blinked open and she smiled. He took off his hat and laid it further down on the bed, bowing his head to kiss her frail hand. 'How are you doing?' Mary coughed, Blood splattering the handkercheif she used to shield it. She mustered all her strength and spoke 'Jack... i believe i shall leave you... very soon.' His eyes welled with tears. Mary had been like a mother to him. Only she knew him by his real name. 'The stars are calling Mary. How shall you wish to go?' He lifted one cold hand to her cheek and stroked it gently. 'To the sea.' He grabbed her hand tighter at this and pressed his face up against her warm fingers to stifle his tears. He was devistated inside. The one person he had allowed himself to get close to, leaving him. Dying. He felt her frail hand on the back of his head. 'It is time for me to go now. Goodbye my love. Take care of him.' She took one last breath and was still. The captain let out what sounded to be a painful cry. His head was still buried deep withing her sheets, clutching her hand. He was sobbing painfully. without warning, he let out a scream 'Dont Leave me Mary. Dont you Dare leave me...' this trailed off into yet more crying which gradually subsided. He had to pull himself together. He was Captain. He needed to be strong. He stood, still shaking from the greif, and turned to Olivia. His face nonchanlant. His eyes were stained in black. 'my coat.'

Olivia wasn’t too sure what to make of the captain’s response. She was only informing him, not sure if she could take the constant snapping Olivia was about to tell him she was only trying to help but knew this wasn’t the right time. With the weight of his coat she turned to a hook on the wall and hung up the coat before appearing as if she was cleaning worn compresses and clothes but she was focusing on the conversation the Captain and Mary were having. Watching her grandmother pass away was painful; she didn’t make a sound until she had handed the heave coat to the captain. Olivia was deathly pale with grief; when she heard the door close the tears flooded. As the news went around the ship there was mourning, one of the most loved and most known workers on the ship had passed.

The funeral was at sunset the next day; all those below deck took were stood around Mary’s body; covered in a white cloth on a board the length of her body. Surrounding her were personal items and wreaths of dried flowers and lavender that most of the women stored. Nearly everyone had words to say about Mary. Many of the younger crew said she was like a mother to them. As the last flickers of sunlight danced on the horizon, the matches were lit and were set in the lavender. As the first few flames began to grow Olivia stepped forward and undid the necklace of rose quartz and laid it on top of the white linen cloth.
Some of the sail hands lowered the board into the water and within minutes Mary began to drift to sea. No one moved until the flames had reached the horizon. For the rest of evening all those below drank to Mary’s name and sang to her spirit wishing a safe passing to the next world. Olivia though went to the door of Captain’s quarters.
Wiping her bloodshot eyes Olivia knock on the door “Captain, today is when I am to return.”

'Come in.' His voice was gruff, and sounded tired. There were empty rum bottles strewn across the vast floorspace. He was wearing a pair of fine cloth shorts that were ragged at the bottom, and a red bandana. Nothing else. His eyes were framed with smudged black it was dripping down his face as he stumbed to the door and opened it wide, Grabbing the girl by the wrist and dragging her into his quaters and slamming the door behind them. He stank of alcohol and was obviously completely drunk, which was strange for him as he never drank onboard. To speak the truth he had drank non-stop since he got back from Mary's death. Drank and wept and Drank some more. He watched the funeral through a window looking out to the deck. It was painful, or at least it would have been if he were sober. He pulled Olivia into him and wrapped his arms around her roughly, grabbing onto her violently. 'Hows a pretty thing like you get on my ship, eh?' he shouted, Dragging his nails across her cheek. He pushed her backwards onto his desk and duley followed, pinning her down to the cold wood and holding her wrists above her head. He leant ontop of her and looked at her face. He wanted something, anything to take away the pain, the alocohol wasnt strong enough, so she would have to take its place.
